Yatra packing list

Choose a yatra type for a checklist you can pack from. Every list is a general guide, not a rule.

Quick answer

A yatra packing list should cover documents and photo ID, medicines, modest clothing, footwear you can walk in, and a small day bag for the darshan queue. What changes with the yatra is the weight and the weatherproofing: a hill trip such as Char Dham needs warm layers and rain cover, a Kumbh trip needs a mat and a light blanket, and a trip with children needs snacks and spare clothes. Choose your yatra type below for a checklist you can pack from.

Key facts at a glance

  • Photo ID for every traveller, plus registration papers where the yatra needs them.
  • Medicines in the original strip with the prescription, and a small first aid kit.
  • Modest clothing for temple towns, and a scarf or shawl for covered shrines.
  • Footwear you can already walk in, and socks for cold floors.
  • A power bank, because charging points are scarce in queues and dormitories.
  • Hill yatras add warm layers and rain cover; Kumbh adds a mat and light blanket.

Frequently asked questions

What should I pack for a hill yatra like Char Dham?

Warm layers, a windproof and waterproof outer layer, broken-in walking shoes, socks, a torch, a power bank and any medicine you may need for breathlessness or motion sickness. Even in summer the hill mornings are cold, so treat the warm layer as essential rather than optional.

What should I carry for Kumbh Mela?

A light mat or sheet to sit on, a thin blanket, a refillable water bottle, spare clothes you do not mind getting wet, and a small bag you can keep on you at all times. The crowd is the main constraint, so travel light and keep your valuables close.

Do temples have a dress code?

Many do. Covered shoulders and knees are the safe rule, and some shrines ask for traditional dress or a head covering. A scarf or shawl in your day bag covers most situations and is easy to carry.

Is leather allowed inside temples?

Some temples, particularly in Kerala and in parts of the south, do not allow leather items inside. Check the rule for the specific temple before you travel, and keep a cloth bag for footwear.

How much luggage should I take?

As little as you can manage, because you will be moving between stays and handling your own bags. One main bag and one day bag is enough for most yatras, and it makes shared transport far easier.

What documents does a yatra need?

Photo ID for every traveller is the baseline. The Char Dham Yatra also requires online registration, and vehicles on those routes need a Green Card and Trip Card, so carry printed confirmations as well as the phone copies.
